GLITAZONES AND INSULIN

In October 2004 the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM) and the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a reminder that that glitazones are contraindicated in combination with insulin in the UK.  Despite this statement many UK diabetologists have felt forced to offer this combination to selected insulin resistant patients because of the lack of an alternative. A letter of advice has been obtained from the Medical Protection Society (MPS) about the legal position of such diabetologists. ABCD has written to CSM/MHRA in response to their statement and MHRA have replied. The CSM/MHRA reminder and MPS letter, the ABCD letter and the MHRA response are published here on the ABCD website. The original MHRA advise is based on CSM Yellow Cards.
